Naveen Verma, a leader in computer hardware design, has been named the Ralph H. and Freda I. Augustine Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective September 28.

Verma’s research into the physics of integrated circuits has resulted in groundbreaking technologies in biomedical and advanced artificial intelligence applications. His AI chips use a mix of analog and digital signals and combine computation and memory functions into a single device, making them far more efficient than today’s industry-leading designs. Verma has commercialized this invention through a company he co-founded in 2022, EnCharge AI. He and his two co-inventors won a 2024 Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development Council of New Jersey for the technology.

Endowed professorships are Princeton’s highest academic honor for faculty members, bestowed on distinguished professors who break new ground in their disciplines and inspire their students. The Ralph H. and Freda I. Augustine Professorship was made possible by a gift from Princeton University alumnus Norman Augustine, who earned a bachelor’s degree in 1957 and a master’s degree in 1959 — both in aeronautical engineering — and his wife Margareta “Meg” Engman Augustine.

Verma was previously a Distinguished Lecturer in the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. Other past honors include an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Princeton Engineering Council, an AFOSR Young Investigator Research Program Award, an Intel Early Career Faculty Honor Program Award and an NSF CAREER Award. Verma joined the Princeton faculty in 2009 and was promoted to full professor in 2019. He has been director of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education since 2020.
